It is so hard to avoid the temptation. You have a big email list at your disposal. It’s so easy to create a newsletter and click ‘send’ to the entire list. It’s so easy to send multiple times if you convince yourself your customers signed up because they’re interested in your offers. “If I send this coupon or offer out, resend to those that didn’t open, then resend again to those that didn’t click, they won’t mind. They want to get email from us, why else would they have signed up?”

Resist the temptation this holiday season. Don’t do multiple sends of the same message. Don’t run an A/B test then send out the winner and the loser. Follow best practice and respect your users, your customers. The short term gain does not outweigh the long term pain this strategy will cause.

Many companies have their receptionist report to facilities or administration. This is a huge mistake as your receptionist is often the first person your visitors talk to you, the first person a customer may speak to on the phone, or the person someone might reach when they are in need of help. Your receptionist can become the “face” of your company to many people. Move your receptionist into marketing and take advantage of a terrific opportunity to interact with your customers.

This works with all sorts of sales professions from realty to IT recruiting. Many restaurants will do this for free if you promise the free meal will be purchased at their establishment.

Select a restaurant in your target area or which your target market frequents (e.g. IT professionals frequently eat at BW3s – the wings joint.)
